Anduro Marketing brings Google's Wendy Muller to Calgary
We're very excited to announce our partnership with the Calgary Council for Advanced Technologies (CCAT) in hosting a special event at the TELUS Convention Centre March 15th. Wendy Muller, Head of Canada, Advertising Sales and Operations for Google Inc. will be speaking to Calgary business leaders in regard to Google's Vision for the Future of Internet Marketing.
In today’s world, marketers demand higher accountability for their advertising dollars. In her keynote address, Wendy will explain how to design a Search Engine Marketing (SEM) campaign to meet this demand as well as discuss what tools are available to measure and improve the effectiveness of that campaign. Further, Wendy will outline Google’s image of the growing Internet Marketing landscape and the effects it will have on Alberta businesses and Internet users. Focus will be on the practical realities of search engines and Pay-per-Click (PPC) models in terms of their impact on marketing campaigns and sales strategies.
The CCAT event will be sponsored by Macleod Dixon LLP, Commonwealth Legal and West Canadian in association with contributors throughout Alberta.

Google in the News
Google has been in the media spotlight a lot in the last few weeks. Some of the latest updates include:
Follow-up: Redefining Redirects
Last month, we examined the use of redirects. One of our readers emailed our office afterward, confirming just how useful that information was. He also brought up a very good point which we wanted to pass along. The reader had recently relocated a number of old pages from his website. He then assigned a redirect to the affected URLs. But rather than assigning a 301 redirect (moved permanently) which search engines and users could follow back to a relevant page, he implemented a custom 404 redirect back to the home page.
As mentioned last month, Web developers can create custom 404 pages to be used in the event of a client input error. For example, say a visitor to 'www.yoursite.com' meant to type 'www.yoursite.com/contact.html' to reach the contact page, but accidentally typed 'www.yoursite.com/contacy.html.' With a custom 404 redirect in place, the visitor can be guided to an error page that may contain useful information (e.g. a sitemap) as well as a friendly notice of their error, as opposed to the annoying, 'this page cannot be found' default. For an example, click this link: ../dhjaskh
In this reader's case, the 301 was the way to go and has since been implemented by the reader and traffic has nearly doubled! We're certainly glad Anduro Marketing was able to provide information needed by our readers and thank the reader for his report!
SEO-Browser Featured Tip: Meta Tags
In the old days (being as incredibly long as a couple of years back) search engines relied on a certain set of tags included in the HTML coding of your website. These tags are called Meta tags and were, at one time, the key factor in your pages being recognized by search engines. While Meta tags are still used widely today, the search engines have, for the most part, outgrown their use and even avoided them as they have been used as spam traps in the past. There are many different Meta tags (see an exhaustive list here) but the vast majority of them are relegated to useful reminders for programmers.
It is important to note that some search engines (such as Yahoo) and a variety of directories still reference Meta tags, and that there are a few tags which remain useful. These include the 'description' tag (allows for a brief description of the site for directory cataloguing), the 'keywords' tag (allows for additional keyword placement) and the 'robots' tag (governs which pages can and cannot be indexed by the search engines - though the use of a Robots.txt file is recommended). To find out what Meta tags are being used on your site, visit SEO-Browser.com.
